received a $428 second payment.
"My short-term goal is to expand my business, I have a grocery shop and I would like to start charcoal production and increase my sources of income. My other goal is to take my child who just finished high school to college and pursue a Diploma in teaching. I am already saving $1.5 a day and hopefully, in September 2023 he can enroll."

Patience
received a $428 second payment.
"Before the transfer, My husband and I were in charcoal production. In a week I would get $15 which enabled me to buy food for my family. I have two children and whenever I do not get customers, my family sleeps hungry. Receiving this transfer has helped me buy a motorbike at $400 that my husband operates both for taking charcoal to the market and also for human transportation. We now transport charcoal three times a week, each time we sell four sacks we get $50 a week. I also opened a grocery shop where I sell kale and bananas and I get $5 a day. The rest of the $100 was spent on food and clothing. Right now my family is okay, both our incomes help me pay school fees and we now have three meals a day. I am grateful."

"I would like to marry this year, I did not get the opportunity to get a wife due to a lack of dowry money. Earlier on I had wanted to marry but the parent asked for $1500 which I have never had my entire life. They refused to give me a wife saying I should pay first."

Rose
received a $443 initial payment.
"I had a lot planned for the transfer, and when it arrived, I made sure to spend it on my enlisted items. I needed goats for a long-term project, but I only got one from a friend who was selling it for $20. Because I am still looking for one, I have set aside money that I will use once I find the desired breed. In addition, I spent $45 on a mattress to replace the worn-out bedding I had been using. I currently have three children in school and had to purchase school uniforms for the two whose uniforms were tattered because I had purchased one new one before the school year ended. I also spent $30 on groceries for my family of seven, $70 on new clothes for my five children, and $50 on school fees for the three who are currently enrolled. I used the remaining funds to pay for a plot of land that my co-wife and I are purchasing because our previous plot was insufficient for the two of us to build our homes. I am glad she agreed to move to the new piece and is now working on building her new houses. "

Catherine
received a $443 initial payment.
"I spent $260 on 24 iron sheets with the intention of building a new house for my family of five. My sons have been looking for a place to sleep in the nearby school whenever we have visitors at home. I've always felt bad when my children slept in class, and I'm hoping to put an end to it by building a large house with an extra room for them. This room will not only provide them with a place to sleep, but also with plenty of space to study after school. I also spent $56 on lumber, $25 on nails and ridges, $67 on cement, and $20 on transportation. I also paid $50 in labor costs during construction, and I am relieved that the house is nearly finished. I am still responsible for paying all of the water bills as well as a portion of the labor during the completion process."

Josephine
received a $443 initial payment.
"My household had been reliant on a rechargeable lamp that could only light one room. Moving out at night was terrifying because it was always dark, and I had wished to connect electricity to my house. I spent $460 connecting electricity after receiving the first transfer, including labor charges. I am relieved that my apartment is now well-lit and that I don't have to move the lamp from one room to the next. I can also charge my phone, plug in my radio, and use other electrical appliances in the house. In addition, I purchased a $53 mattress and sand to use in furnishing the floor of my house."

Florence
received an initial payment.
"The most noticeable difference in my daily life is the comfort of sleeping on a comfortable mattress in a bed that I purchased with money from my first transfer. I am currently sleeping well and waking up less with back pain caused by the hard floor and light rags I was sleeping on. I am grateful to GiveDirectly and hope that the subsequent transfer will continue to transform my entire family."

Agnes
received a $443 initial payment.
"We had been living in a small house built with various construction materials as a family of six, just to make a roof for my family. We had been living on my parents' land, which was still being subdivided among the siblings before erecting a semi-permanent structure. I was relieved when I was given my share, and after receiving the first transfer, I went out and bought construction materials, including 30 iron sheets for $10 each, three bags of cement for $20, and building poles for $30. I have not begun construction yet because I need to pay the construction costs and purchase additional materials that are still missing. My husband and I have been doing casual labor for a pittance, barely enough to support our family of six. We agreed to spend a portion of this first transfer on a motorcycle. We were fortunate to obtain a used motorcycle from a neighbor who was selling it after being involved in an accident and being unable to ride it any longer. We agreed to pay in installments, with the first payment of $100. We are currently renovating it before using it to provide transportation services. In addition, I used the remaining funds to buy food for my family to supplement the wages we were receiving from casual labor."
