Doris
received a $28 sixth payment.
"I plan to invest in a small-scale business where I will open a mini-shop for income generation. I currently hawk liquid soap to provide food for my family. On a good day, I can earn $2 in profits which is never enough to cater to my family’s basic needs. Beginning this February, I will save at least $5 per month of my transfers to help me start and grow the business."

Dama
received a $28 sixth payment.
"I have been paying fees for my son through the transfer since last year and I'm glad that he completed his college studies, courtesy of GiveDirectly. I am now planning to buy 10 pieces of iron sheets, building poles and timber in order to rebuild my living house's roof. It was blown away and destroyed by strong winds and I couldn't readily renovate it because the transfer went to fees only. I will be purchasing 4 iron sheets every month to facilitate this. Once I am done with renovating the roof, I will save some money and buy some goats, I'm currently owning two. These are assets that I can also rely on in case of a financial need since they will reproduce and increase in number."

received a $442 second payment.
"I appreciate Give Directly for doing everything correctly and with a lot of wisdom. You have been a blessing to our whole village, you have given us money to buy food hence eradicating hunger. Nowadays we are no longer worried about tomorrow' since we have stocked enough food in the house. The only thing I would request you to do better is; not to deduct the cost of phones from our second transfer. Just issue the phones to us for free."

Linet
received a $28 sixth payment.
"The beginning of the year was not quite great for me and my family, and this is because, due to the really heavy rainfall one of the walls of my house unfortunately collapsed because the foundation was not that great and also because it's a mud house. My intention with the money that I will receive this year is to ensure that me and my husband can come together to finally feel like we have a better home for ourselves and that we don't have to worry about it collapsing anymore. I will preferably want to buy bricks this time around so that we can have a more permanent home with a better foundation. I also plan on using the money to provide nourishment for my family."

Wesily
received a $428 second payment.
"For the longest time, I was buying one litre of milk daily for my family especially for my little daughter. Since a litre costs KES 75, this was so much for me because I do not make much profit operating a general shop. My desire was to buy a dairy cow so that I can get enough milk for my family and some for sell buy I was not financially in a position to buy a cow. With my second transfer, I spend KES 30000 to dairy cow, KES 12000 to buy chicken that I'm intending to start a poultry farming business with and the balance to add more stock to my business. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for helping me achieve two of my goals."

Chepkemoi
received a $442 second payment.
"A month before I was enrolled in the program, I was in my last semester in collage where I was taking an education course. Although I was excited to finish my studies I was not hopeful about graduating because I had a fees balance of $930 that I needed to clear for me to graduate. Since I am the bread winner in the family and I don't have a reliable job, I was sure it would take me two to three days to raise that money but I am so grateful that these transfers came in handy for me. I added $390 to savings that I had from the first transfer and paid the fees balance and spend the balance to seek medical attention since I was not feeling well."

"What GiveDirectly does well is believing that people living in poverty understand their needs and knows what they want. By giving them unconditional cash transfers, they are able to uplift their living standards in various ways."
