"The issue of food insecurity has been a thorn in the flesh. Going forward we have decided to put a concerted effort to plant food crops such as maize and vegetables to get enough production that can sustain us throughout the year. We intend to plant maize seedlings, DKK 777 variety that is highly resistant to drought and diseases. This way we will be assured of the harvest. In doing this we intend to do proper timing so that we can maximize on the production."

Kiplangat
received a $421 second payment.
"We had been struggling to pay school fees four our 3 children who are in various secondary school. The transfers came as a big reliever for the stress of raising school fees that we were undergoing. We were able to use KES 30000 to clear all the term's school fees plus the arrears. It lessened the burden of paying the school fees and it gave my children ample time to study, the one who was in Form 4 got a B+ plus and he is due to join the university later this year. It was quite a remarkable achievement and the fruits of the transfer was felt. We were extremely happy about the transfers and the subsequent results that our boy obtained."

Ludia
received a $421 second payment.
"I am a widow, my husband passed just before we received the transfers. We depleted almost all the resources we had for his treatment. Eventually, he succumbed to the diseases and left us as paupers. We sold all the cows we had and so when I receive the transfers from GiveDirectly it came as a huge reliever of the burden I was going through. In order to reconstruct my life and that of my family I decided to purchase a dairy cow worth KES 40000. The cow recently calved and we are getting enough milk for our consumption, it has assisted us a lot and I am so excited about the help."

"GiveDirectly is a good organization that helps the poor to better their lives. Whatever they told us they delivered and we were happy. They are truthful people. However, they should closely follow up on those who use the transfer to buy alcohol, they should monitor them to ensure that the transfers are used in the right way that can transform lives. They should collaborate with the assistant chief in doing so for the general good of the community. It is indeed a waste to use the transfers for alcohol."

Kiptonui
received a $421 second payment.
"I plan to build a better house since the one I have at the moment is old and dilapidated. It is not conducive to living in. When it rains it gives me and my family a lot of trouble since it lets water in and so it becomes cold and when there is intense heat sun during the day it is extremely hot. So it is not conducive to living in it. My main aspiration, therefore, is to be able to look for finances to enable me to realize the dream of having a better house."

"I am passionate about doing business and I usually engage myself in shop-keeping business. The premise I was using in the past was rented and it was expensive. Previously, I had purchased a plot but lacked the funds to develop it. When I received the cash transfers from GiveDirectly I decided to construct a structure to serve as my shop. I used KES 40000 for its construction. As we speak the business is up and running and I am so elated about it. I used some of the money to add onto my stock. It is a source of livelihood and it has brought a lot of impact on our lives."

Kitsao
received a $436 second payment.
"I decided to invest in livestock keeping when I withdrew the money from the second transfer. I went along this path because it does not disappoint. After all, livestock does procreate, and if necessary, they may be traded for money. Thus, I spent $420 to purchase ten galla goats.
This gives me confidence that I will soon have a sizable flock and that it will help me to support my family. Because of the harsh climate in our area, I preferred goats to cows. Goats can endure. After that, I bought meals for my family using the remaining money."

Nzingo
received a $436 second payment.
"My current objective is to launch a dry-fish sales business. Since there are only a few people in my area, there is less competition, which is why I picked it. Due to the lack of trees in our area, my son's business of producing and selling charcoal has become unreliable, so the goal of this enterprise is to generate cash. I want to reach this objective as soon as I have some money."

"The greatest challenge I have faced was when I planted my crops at the top of the hill last year and due to the heavy rains from October, they were carried away. This greatly affected me on planting more crops there as I am an old lady I feel like a burden to my children who send me money to support myself."
