Joseah

"Right now, I want to concentrate on dairy farming because I now have three cows and one of them is almost giving birth. At the end of the year, I want to have five dairy cows and accomplishing this means that I will have a reliable source of income and thus I will be able to provide for my family comfortably."

"In my own opinion, what GiveDirectly does well is doing follow up after every transfer, even though the transfers are unconditional, no one will waste the money in activities like alcohol drinking because they know they should be accountable on what the spend the money on."

"What GiveDirectly does well is giving us unconditional cash transfers that we spend on empowering ourselves in various ways,. Honestly, everything that you did from enrollment stage to the time we received our second transfer was perfect and I didn't notice any area that you need to improve on."

Khadija
received a $428 second payment.
"My goal is to buy a sewing machine and a cow. I need a cow because it will keep my son busy when he comes home after school, he will be taking it to feed. We will also get milk from it since right now we do buy from neighbours and sometimes we lack the money to do so. About a sewing machine, I have a dream of acquiring tailoring skills so that I can be making nice clothes for people as they pay me. I'll not be fully depending on my husband for every financial need. I need $200 for a cow and $180 for the machine. I pray to God so that Give Directly can come back and add me more transfers as I do not have anywhere else to get money from."

Mary
received a $428 second payment.
"I'm a primary school teacher and my income is insufficient to cater for all my family's needs. I had bought a piece land and began constructing houses, but this project stopped because I did not have enough money. So when I received this second transfer, I went straight to the hardware and bought the following construction materials; 10 iron sheets worth $96, 85 pieces of wood @ $1, nails worth $15, a bag of cement worth $7 and a steel door worth $100 . I paid $65 for labour and had my 2 houses neatly constructed Before, my children and I used to sleep in a grass thatched one room house, it was too small that it could not accommodate visitors. I'm happy that right now, I can host visitors and have them sleeping comfortably in my new houses. I also spent $300 on 2 heifers, I can't wait to start drinking milk from my own cows. I chose cows because of their many benefits, infact if things become worst, I can resell them at profitable prices."

"What a life! Being in a marriage for 10 years without getting a child was the greatest menace that contributed to the stress which has recently exposed me to high blood pressure. It was until the year 2000 that I conceived my firstborn. Although I am blessed with 3 children now, my life has never been the same because I went through cesarean procedures for all the 3 kids. This has affected my ability to take up heavy tasks, a situation that has stopped me from fully utilizing my energy. I have in many cases felt so down when I could not use my free time productively. The feeling of idleness due to my health condition has robbed away my joy as a responsible mother and I, therefore, consider this as my biggest challenge."

"I have no stable job so I just sell charcoal on small scale while my husband is too old to work. I'm the bread winner but most of the time we hardly have food to eat. I took $170 of the second transfer and bought 6 bales of maize flour, 50 kg of rice, 12 kg of wheat flour and 3 litres of cooking oil. My family had suffered because of hunger since food prices have really hiked. I'm grateful because right now I have food security in my house and this gives me so much peace. My 2 sons who are in secondary school had been sent away from school because of the school fees arrears totaling to $300, therefore I also went to the school and paid that debt. Previously, we used to struggle from hand to mouth and incase I'm left with any little amount, that is when I consider paying school fees. I would even sell my hens sometimes, to pay their school fees. I'm glad that Give Directly made it easier and now my sons are concentrating on their studies without fear of being send home for school fees. in secondary. I had always wished to rear a cow and see it multiply, I even saved $100 from the first transfer for this purpose, hence I took $160 from the second transfer , added it to the $100 and bought a cow. I'm happy that I now have a long term investment and I can sell the calves later when I have an emergency. I also bought few clothes for myself with the remaining money since the ones I had are already torn. I can't clearly recall how much the clothes did cost."

"My dream has always been to expand my business. To be able to have a larger flow of income would mean the world to me and my family. This would allow me to be able to build a 6-bedroom house as well as some shops to rent out."
