Zawadi
received a $27 sixth payment.
"In the village, people do not like walking under the scorching sun. My goal is to open a grocery shop where I will be selling tomatoes, onions, and green leafy vegetables. I plan to save two months of transfer and venture into the business."

Andei
received a $421 second payment.
"In the coming year, I hope to start a small kiosk business. This will be a reliable source of livelihood that will support my family's basic needs like food as well as educate my children. I intend to sell dry fish, sugar, salt and maize flour. Currently, I depend on charcoal burning which is energy-draining and characterized by low income."

"GiveDirectly does very well by giving their support in terms of cash and accompanying that with the freedom to choose how someone would want to spend their money is even more marvelous. Looking at the kind of investments that I have made over this period makes me very happy. These are things I would not have done had I not been given the freedom to choose what to do for myself. I did not find anything with GiveDirectly that I thought would have been done better."

received a $436 second payment.
"As I'm sure you've heard from numerous other recipients, GiveDirectly is exceptional at realizing dreams. I was able to return to school, change my life, and graduate debt-free thanks to the money. Many people in my community share the same situation. Our lives have altered significantly as a result of GiveDirectly. I only ask that they think about returning so that they can help us all do much more and finish some of the projects that these transfers have given us the opportunity to commence."

Kache
received a $422 second payment.
"I spent $260 to pay for a half-acre piece of land that I had started paying for using the initial cash transfer. This is where I intend to build my home and stay with my son, with whom I have been living together at my paternal home since he was in grade seven. I have always dreamt of living in my own compound with my children, but financial constraints have barred me. The little I previously made from burning charcoal was mostly used for food and the school fees of my younger son. Am grateful Give Directly made this dream a reality for me and I cannot wait to complete the payments and start building my house. Next, I spent $90 to clear a school fee debt for my child so that he would prepare for his national examinations peacefully without being interrupted to collect the balance. Also, I bought him a mattress and bucket worth $36 to use during the examination period; students were required to stay in school throughout that period. I secured two goats using $65. I am happy that one of them gave birth to a kid. I believe rearing these goats will help me with my future needs as I could sell them to raise funds. The remaining amount went towards the purchase of foodstuff, which ensured my household enjoyed regular meals throughout the year. "

Kahunda
received a $436 second payment.
"My mind is currently focused on supporting my son to clear his wife’s dowry payments. Hearing my inlaws threatening to take their daughter back really broke my heart since my family has grown fond of her over the past couple of years. I would not wish to see her return to her maternal home unless it is just for a normal visit. I pray to raise some funds and support my son in settling the remaining $400. After that, I intend to work on securing more goats to expand my herd. "
