"With my second transfer, I spent $300 on three goats that I have been raising at home in the hopes of later selling them to assist pay for the school expenses for my two children. I struggle occasionally to provide for my family because I make a low salary as a primary school teacher. My husband, a veterinarian, has been a fantastic support system. I paid off a $100 bill that had accumulated to make sure my kids stayed in school. I restocked depleting food supplies and consumables with the remaining $130, as well as purchasing some new clothing for the entire family."

"What GiveDirectly does well is uplifting people's lives through giving unconditional cash transfers. People in the village were able to to transform their lives in ways they would never have by their own."

"In the near future and beyond. I am planning to hire a piece of land for farming as I own a smaller one. I will as well hire a tractor for farming instead of doing it with the help of casual labourers. This is cost-effective as compared to when it is done by the labourers. In addition, I have plans of starting up a groceries business to be run in the evenings. Groceries business has high demand as food is consumed on a daily basis. The profits earned will be enough for my young family's basic needs like food, clothing and school fees."

"Owning a nice permanent house has always been our longing in life. For many years, we have been living in a small one-roomed house with my 8 children. Additionally, our house was about to collapse and it serves as the kitchen and bedroom at the same time. I spent a larger portion of recent transfers to continue the construction of a two-roomed permanent house for the family. I bought 16 bags of cement and paid the labour costs. Currently, I am happy to see the progress that I have been able to make in releasing my dream. In addition, I spent the remaining amount to purchase sufficient food for the family since we are currently experiencing drought and famine in our area."

"I have plans to expand into large-scale tomato, cabbage, and vegetable farming. Notwithstanding the severe drought we are currently having, I am planning to make some savings from my current farming and from the sale of cabbages to help with that."

"In the next one year and beyond my plan is to improve my grocery selling business and in turn raise enough money to pay school fees and make our lives better as a family. I have one child in secondary school while another one in grade seven and I am staring at a situation where I will be required to pay school fees. This calls for us to save up enough money to be able to do this comfortably. It will therefore be top among my priorities to do this."

"I loved that the transfers are sent straight to the recipients personal Mpesa account as compared to other organisations that we hear about where one has to go get anything promised from a third party. this ensures safety and confidentiality. Givedirectly aslo keeps their word on when to receive the transfers as they are prompt, therefore any plans made depending on the transfers goes accordingly. Everything in my opinion was well done. My only wish is that if Givedirectly could come back to our villages to check on how we are progressing after say two years and if possible give additional funds."

"I only ask God for one thing every day and that is good health and strength to work hard so that I can earn enough money to keep my children in school. The only thing I want right now is for all of my children to graduate from high school and achieve their dreams. I believe that they will look back and sincerely thank me for everything I have done for them after they have achieved their life's objectives, they will be in a position to help me and eradicate all the low life we live in right now. I work from 6 am to 6 pm every day for a salary of $50 a month, which is not even enough for me to save and start any new business as of now, so I just work hard in my work thanking God for it all."

"I am currently working as a butcher who is paid based on commission. Life is really difficult because the prices of all commodities are so high and affording to live a good and decent life is becoming so impossible. I am planning to really save enough so that I can easily open my own shop where I will be buying shoes in bulk and selling it at wholesale price in order to attract a lot of customers. As at now, I have no wife and any child to take care of so it will be so easy for me to work tirelessly and make sure I save enough."

"I spent $300 to buy bricks and cement for the construction of my new two-room house, which I started building using the initial transfer. Owning a brick-walled house had always been my dream because they are durable and do not easily collapse from adverse weather conditions. Although the construction is not complete because I ran out of money, am glad that Give Directly played a huge role in initiating the project. Next, I paid $100 school fees for my grandson who had stayed home for almost two months from unpaid tuition balances. His parents could not afford to clear the balance as they are unemployed, with six other children who needed support. He happily resumed his studies and has never missed classes for that long again. Also, I used the rest to buy two goats. When these animals multiply, they will increase my wealth as I could sell them to raise money for my family’s needs. At least, this will reduce my dependence on my three sons, as they already have so many responsibilities from their families. "
