Ajabu
received a $394 initial payment.
"I've been burning charcoal in order to sell it and earn money to support my family, which has been difficult with the present economic situation. Nonetheless, since receiving the transfers, we have been able to live a better life; our children are in school reading with no disruptions because their school fees are fully paid; we are eating well because I have stocked the food stuffs; unlike before, when we would only eat when we had money and sleep hungry when we didn't, I would say God has been gracious to us through givedirectly transfers, and we will live to remember. I'm excited to start a business that will allow us to survive on second transfers."

Rael
received a $129 initial payment.
"We have a farm close to Marigat town, and since accessing water there is considerably simpler, we usually plant food crops like corn and practice some irrigation. We therefore spent $20 to buy water for irrigation using the first transfer received. There is currently a drought here, making it practically hard for plants to survive on their own, therefore this is the only reliable method of obtaining food. In addition to the goats I already own, I also spent $30 on a goat for rearing. Goats are relatively draught-resistant and inexpensive to maintain and thus the reason we keep them. I bought food for my family and paid for land tilling with the remainder of the transfer."

Targok
received a $143 initial payment.
"The biggest change in my life has been being able to feed my family of four without necessarily having to sell a goat from my flock. Because there is a shortage of food, the drought has had a serious negative impact on us and raised food prices. My goats, including the one I recently bought, will be helpful in the future when it comes to providing for our other requirements."

Regina
received a $143 initial payment.
"I received a notification message that I had received $200 from Givedirectly as we had been promised when I was on my way back back to my home from the school where I volunteer as a teacher. I praised God silently for Givedirectly and prayed for his blessing to Givedirectly as I was overcome with joy."

Irene
received a $394 initial payment.
"I spent KES 21000 of my first transfer on school fees for my three children in high school. Raising their fees has been difficult, but I am pleased that they are now at ease in school. I do not have a source of income that will allow me to keep them in school. My breadwinner husband divorced, leaving me to care for the children. Despite these difficulties, I am grateful that my children are still in school and are no longer being sent home due to a lack of funds. Apart from the fees, I was also building a house and ran out of materials. So I used the remaining funds to purchase 15 iron sheets, timber, and labor. I finished the construction and am now living happily with my children in my new home."

Kadzo
received a $394 initial payment.
"I used KES 36000 from my first transfer to buy three new wooden beds and three new mattresses for myself and four children. For many years, I was unable to replace my bedding. I used to enjoy sleeping on new beddings when I was newly married, which was many years ago. I could not even consider purchasing new bedding because I could not afford any of the existing bedding. As of now, my family and I have a good night's sleep, which was not the case previously because my children were sleeping on dusty ground, which nearly exposed them to respiratory infections. In addition, I paid tuition for my son, who is currently in his second year of university studies. Because of the transfers, he was able to stay in school, giving me plenty of time to prepare for the next transfer and ensure he has a smooth semester flow. I spent the remainder on food items such as maize flour, ensuring that my family had enough to eat."

Mokiyo
received a $143 initial payment.
"My son is in third grade and my daughter is in fourth. When I got my transfer, I used $10 to cover their tuition fee and the remaining $10 for our meals. Prior to GiveDirectly's registration, I used to sell some of my goats to raise money for both school expenses and food purchases. I'm glad that up to this point, I haven't sold any, and we've been able to feed ourselves and keep our kids from being sent back home."

Sidi
received a $394 initial payment.
"I was busy tending to my crops in the afternoon when I received two messages on my phone in quick succession. I was not expecting any money that day, so I did not check right away. When I finally calmed down, I called my child, who checked the messages and confirmed that I had received my first transfer. I was overjoyed because I could finally afford to build my dream home."

Karicha
received a $25 tenth payment.
"My goal is to invest more in livestock rearing and poultry farming as a means of livelihood to reduce the financial burdens in my household. I am incredibly grateful for the previous cash transfers, as they have allowed me to acquire two goats. By owning this livestock, I will accumulate enough wealth that will help my family's living conditions. I decided to take this lane of investment because crop farming has been disappointing for the last three years."
