Jumaa
received a $28 fifth payment.
"I am a single parent surviving on casual jobs such as burning and selling charcoal which does not pay much. The transfer so far has been helpful to me, I have been able to pay fees on time for my son. My goal is that through the monthly transfers, I will be able to better my life and that of my son. My plan is to see him excel in his academics as he is joining high school and I am hopeful that he will continue with his studies without interruptions concerning fees. Apart from school, I am also planning to buy more livestock like chickens and goats. I currently have 6 chickens and 1 goat. Since casual jobs are unreliable, this livestock will greatly help me as they multiply. I will sell the offspring and raise money to cater for my future financial needs like fees for my son."

Winnie
received a $146 initial payment.
"The tremendous distinction in my day-to-day life described before is the cash transfer gave me an expectation for a better tomorrow. The reason why I say this is because I was allowed time to decide what I wanted to do with the money with no conditions. I feel delighted and overjoyed to have achieved my goals in a short period. I have no worries whatsoever about where to get money for the irrigation of my farm in the coming planting season. This is all attributed to the cash transfer. I'm happy for the support of uplifting our lives."

Elizabeth
received an initial payment.
"Upon receiving my transfer, I knew that this was a golden opportunity for me to improve my living status. Life has not been easy on my end since I am a single mother of four children. Raising them single-handedly has been one of the hardest things. Therefore upon receiving my initial transfer, I opened a local eatery where I used $60. Secondly, I paid for the Nhif cover Which I had defaulted on due to lack of money. Additionally, build a chicken house worth $28. All this was not possible to accomplish before due to the lack of funds. I am so grateful for the support that lifted my living standard amazingly."

Kibet
received an initial payment.
"Among the goals that I had written down was for me to be able to increase the farm inputs, by purchasing more seedlings and fertiliser. This is because it is one of the sectors that I depend on in earning a livelihood. Thus, I used $40 on the same. Secondly, I purchased a wire mesh worth $50 for fencing and lastly bought clothes and foodstuffs with the remaining amount. I am a farmer and a businessman, married to one wife and blessed with a child. I am so grateful for the great milestones that I have achieved. I was unable to accomplish them before due to financial constraints."

Jenniffer
received a $146 initial payment.
"The biggest difference is that my life has changed amazingly and I am grateful. I am optimistic that the harvest from the farm will bring a financial breakthrough and a total blessing. This is because this would mean that my child would have enough to eat and also good education. Above all, it brought happiness to our lives because for us Christmas came early. I am glad that I would be able to accomplish it."

Radi
received an initial payment.
"I'm a farmer, married with two children. Our region requires us to sufficiently irrigate our farms because of the harsh climate attributed to this area. It's tough to have a stable source of income within this region. We are however fortunate to have irrigation schemes along the river. Despite this, it's still a challenge to buy seedlings and fertilizers for our farms due to financial constraints. Upon receipt of my initial transfer, my wife and I opted to spend the entire amount of $20 on farming. This would multiply our harvest of maize and beans. It was a difficult period because of the costly prices of seedlings and fertilizers."

Fiath
received a $146 initial payment.
"Two days after receiving my first transfer, I went to a nearby shopping center, where I collected the entire amount and spent $10 on drugs for my goats. I spent $170 on iron sheets, 7 timber, 6 frames, and $10 on transportation because I needed to build a new house, which is still in progress. I started the construction the next day after paying the $40 labor charge. I have always lived in a small house with my family of seven, and because I am the second wife in a polygamous family, my husband has not helped much with the construction work because he has responsibilities in the other household. I am yet to finish the construction and will move in once I have obtained all of the necessary construction materials."

Bildad
received a $162 initial payment.
"Around 4:00 p.m., I received a message from GiveDirectly confirming receipt of the first transfer. I couldn't understand it because it had the name Segovia but not the expected GiveDirectly. The amount indicated provided a hint, and after checking with other neighbors, I was confident that I had received something from GiveDirectly. Because I was working on my farm, I returned home later in the evening to inform my spouse, who was alone at home."
