Faith
received a $339 second payment.
"After receiving the second installment from GiveDirectly, I aimed to finalize the construction of a house that I began when I got the first transfer. As a family of three, we had been living in a single room that doubled as both a kitchen and a living space. To complete the construction, I spent $300 on purchasing essential materials, including 29 iron sheets, 8 bags of cement, and nails. I also paid for the labor charges during the construction period. With the remaining funds, I purchased some food items and saved the rest for any unforeseen circumstances in the future. I am thankful for the assistance provided by GiveDirectly and anticipate doing more with the final transfer."

Judy
received a $339 second payment.
"Our village has had such a positive experience with GiveDirectly that we gladly share our story with anyone who asks. The flexibility to use the transfer in any way that we deemed necessary was a wise decision that we believe should be implemented in all other support programs in other villages. It allowed us to make decisions that addressed the specific challenges we faced in our homes. I am grateful that I was able to build a new home for my son and provide enough food for my children thanks to GiveDirectly's support."

Kauchi
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"I mentioned earlier that I am making a monthly savings of $20 to my savings group. I have 5 grown children with my two eldest being 14 and 12. I moved them to their grandmother when they were around 10 because culturally I cannot live with my grown children in the same house. I have wanted to build them a house so they do not have to stay at their grandmother's house. I see this goal being achieved this year through these transfers. I would like to build a two-roomed house that my other children can transition into when they all grow. I am anticipating using the first round to get the poles for the structure while also savings towards buying the more pricey iron sheets."

"In our culture, when you are older, you are not allowed to live in your parent's house. I moved out of my parents' house quite a while ago and I have been living with my brother. I had desired to get a house of my own but with my small earnings from selling charcoal, there was much hope of achieving this until GD came to us. I was so excited and in August last year, I started setting money aside to use for this building. I would save as low as $15 to ensure that I had enough to start up on the project and in March this year I started construction. In January and March, I set aside my entire transfer of $34 while in February I set aside a part of it $20. I used $14 in February to ensure my family was fed."

Samuel
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"It has been my dream to study Orthopedics and trauma at the college level and when I received my form four results that I had gotten a c- I knew I could pursue this dream. My parents are not very stable financially as my father is a shopkeeper and my mother is a housewife. I knew I could not burden them with the hefty school fees amounts seeing that a number of us are still in school. I decided to start the business to raise cash that I could finally spend in paying my school fees to study at college. I sell the chicken at $7.5 and make a profit of between $3 to $4 once the service charges are removed. I have a steady market for my produce now and I hope to explore this further by increasing my flock. I also see myself at the end of the year having enough savings to start school and I can sustain the school fees from the business as it grows. I will be so happy if I can join college and study Orthopedics and trauma as it's something ever on my mind."

Sidi
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"I live in a two-roomed house with my co-wife. We live peacefully together. However, our roof is old and has been leaking which has proven a problem now that it's raining. I would like to build a similar mud house with an iron roof. It is not cheap and seeing that business is not good I plan to use GD transfers to achieve this by saving. I save $20 monthly and although I have not begun building with the amount I am setting aside I see a possibility of my dreams becoming a reality with time."

"I have a plan of increasing my number of animals. I do currently own one goat and 5 hens which is quite a start since I never had them before. However, I would like to increase this much more. I plan to get more female goats and I plan to breed them so that they reproduce and increase in number. For chicken what I want are more eggs to hatch in turn increasing my numbers. These are the easiest animals to sell around here and having them in large numbers is a big investment as I would be able to meet my family's emergencies as well as get goats and cows from selling the hens or their chicks."

Zawadi
received a $26 ninth payment.
"I have used quite a large percentage of my transfers on my children over the past few months. In January, I spent $20 on school fees for my children in high school while in March I spent $22.5 on school fees for my youngest. I spend so much on school as I do not want my children to miss out on education and end up as hoodlums. There is no work here and so without an education, you are stuck at home with nothing much to do and this makes most young people become thieves. I do not want this for my children. My oldest is in form 2 and his school fees are $400 per term. To ensure that he is not sent away from school we need to pay $50 monthly to bring the school fees debt down. My daughter in form four is also in a school that needs $250 per term and we are $200 in arrears. I want to use this money to get my children through school at least to give them a fighting chance to seek out work beyond our village."

Fatuma

"I am very focused on completing my house. We live in a small one-roomed house which does not allow for much privacy. We live in this small room with my two children and Husband. My oldest is now 4 years old which means soon he will be old enough to need his own space. My youngest is yet one year but I know time flies and he will catch up with his sibling. I want us to be able to have a space for my husband and me while the children have their own space hence my working on constricting a three-roomed house. I have also been buying chicken since I lost the ones I had to a sickness that swept through the village. Now through GD, I have 8 hens with 15 chicks and I only expect the numbers to grow. I plan to sell them and buy goats which can be used for business to take my children through school since they soon will be school-going."

Esther
received a $414 second payment.
"I hope to finish building my business premise this year. Although its structural component is complete, I hope to furnish it soon to operate a shop there. I am a professional fashion designer, but because I do not have a workshop, I do tailoring services at home. I do not do much tailoring since I occasionally go to the market to sell vegetables. Succeeding in that goal will aid in the promotion of my business, providing me with a steady source of money. However, because my spouse is a casual laborer, the success of my business will relieve him of hard labor because we will work together to manage the business as a family."
