Agnes
received a $149 initial payment.
"When I received my most recent transfer of $200, I used $85 to till a piece of land , erect ridges for purposes of irrigation, bought maize seeds and paid casuals who helped me with the planting. I used another $100 to do some shopping for my daughter who was joining nursing school at that time. The remaining amount was used for travelling expenses and to meet other small needs for the family. Without this transfer I would have had to forego some of these things in order to concentrate on paying school fees and settling my child in school. I am so happy that my crops are doing perfectly well right now and I can only look forward to a better harvest. Last year we had serious droughts that rendered our farms almost unproductive and which affected livestock keeping which normally supplements the income that we make."

received a $134 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my daily life is the fact that I am happier than I have ever been before. Looking at the things that I have been able to accomplish makes me just happy. I can only say I am a very happy person having taken my child to school and the fact that I can now afford to plan on what to do. This has made me and my family quite happy"

Susan
received a $134 initial payment.
"When I received my transfer of $180, I used the entire amount to repair my house fully and to buy food for the family. The house that I was living in had been destroyed by termites. It was just a matter of time before it was down or swept by strong winds. I had all along wanted to repair this house but the little income that I made from engaging in odd casual jobs was hardly enough to make ends meet. This coupled with the fact that I am single made it very difficult for me to achieve any of my goals. Today, I am extremely grateful to GiveDirectly that it removed shame that would have come my way had my house been swept by strong winds. I feel I am living a note dignified life now courtesy of GiveDirectly transfers."

Margaret
received a $134 initial payment.
"The biggest difference in my life since I started receiving this transfer is that my stress levels have greatly reduced. Over the recent past some of my livestock were eaten up by a hyena since we stay close to a forest. Such happenings and failing to raise enough money to pay school fees are just but a few incidences that increases my stress levels occasionally. GiveDirectly came in handy and stood in the gap to help me reduce such stresses. I am personally very happy that I was considered to be part of this program. I am sure my life and that of my family shall henceforth change and we shall forever be indebted to GiveDirectly."

Michael
received a $134 initial payment.
"I felt so happy the moment I received money from GiveDirectly. I had a lot of doubts when we were trained before enrollments. I could not figure out how someone would be willing to give me such a huge amount of money without expecting any returns whatsoever. We did not make any harvests from our farms the previous year and life was that tough for us. Having five children that I take care of and farming being the main activity that I do made things a little tougher for us. Getting this support was such a relief to me and my family at such a time as this."

Daisy
received a $335 second payment.
"When my daughter, who has epilepsy, accidentally fell into burning coal while playing, she suffered a severe burn on her body. Although seeking medical attention was expensive, I am grateful for GiveDirectly's timely transfer, which helped pay for some of the medical bills and other household expenses. I used $125 to pay for one of the three required theatre visits before the Baringo Governor intervened and paid the remaining $42 to cover all the skin grafting procedures and medication while she was in the hospital. Despite the burn affecting the right part of her brain and causing damage to her left eye and hands, I am relieved that she survived and is now back in school, closely supervised by teachers and neighboring pupils. With the remaining funds, I spent $325 on a six-seat sofa set, a table, a new bed, and a mattress to make our home more comfortable. Previously, we relied on subsistence farming, which we did on leased land for years. However, persistent drought rendered my husband's remote land unproductive, forcing us to seek a new place to live and farm in the current location."

Grace
received a $335 second payment.
"In the coming year and beyond, my main goal is to complete the construction of my shop, which is currently in its final stages. As a subsistence farmer, I am constantly seeking ways to increase my income and become more financially stable. I plan on investing part of my transfers into buying tomato seeds that I can later sell for a profit. By doing so, I will be able to complete the stocking of my shop and generate additional income to support myself and my family. I am hopeful that this investment will pay off and allow me to expand my business further in the future. Overall, I am excited about the possibilities that the coming year holds and am determined to work hard to achieve my goals."

Kadzo
received a $26 thirteenth payment.
"As my age advances, my ability to work and make an income will decrease. This is why I want to dive deeper into rearing livestock because it is the only way I will be able to provide for my family in the future. Currently, I have three goats and three chickens that I obtained using previous cash transfers. My plan is to continue spending most of the cash transfers to buy more goats and chickens. I believe as they reproduce, they will build me a solid source of income. "

Kache
received a $26 fourteenth payment.
"My goal is to continue controlling my chest complications by obtaining appropriate medication. I never want my health to relapse to where it was before I started receiving the cash transfers. In my old age, I cannot work for an income, which makes cash transfers my main source of income. I trust that I will be able to use the money for my treatment as well as obtain goats for rearing. I trust that owning goats will grow my wealth and allow me to cover my needs in the future. "

Kazungu
received a $26 fourteenth payment.
"Apart from improving my family’s well-being by providing food and supporting the education of my six children, I wish to revamp the roofing of my house. Over the period, the tin roof has corroded and developed perforations, which let it water when it rains, thus dampening the space. I have acquired up to 16 iron sheets through the previous cash transfers, the aim is to secure at least 25 pieces. Once I complete the renovation exercise, I wish to go back to buying goats and cows to expand my existing herd of five goats and three cows. I believe that this will build me enough wealth to provide for my family in the future. "
