Mwenda
received an initial payment.
"The availability of food at home and the peace of mind I experienced after successfully constructing a home for my kid mark the difference between my life before and after GiveDirectly entered it. At first, we were able to spend up to two days a week without eating, but that is no longer an issue for us thanks to the transfer. Again, now that my son has a house of his own and no longer has to seek sanctuary from friends, he can confidently and successfully undertake his academic work, unlike before when he used to get instruction at people's residences."

received a fourteenth payment.
"I previously had livestock (goats) but unfortunately, they all died as a result of drought, but despite the mishaps, I did not give up. My goal is therefore to have as many livestock as possible, to achieve this, I therefore plan to spend my future transfers on buying livestock for rearing because I believe that they would be of great help to my family in the future when faced with financial challenges."

"My main goal is to expand my business and provide the best to my familhy.. I currently do not have enough stock that would enable me to earn good profits, therefore, I would like to expand my business by renting a bigger place and adding more stock to maximize profits as this would enable my family not to face frequent financial challenges as before."

Kabibi
received a tenth payment.
"My future goal is to have a bigger house. The house that I am currently living in is a bit small considering that I have a family which is still growing and therefore I would need a bigger space in the future. My plan is therefore buy goats for rearing hoping that they would bear offspring in the future, then later sell them after a few years and spend the money on my house construction."

"Living a desperate life for over 10 years now since I shifted to this area has directly affected our livelihood as a family. Because of the lack of a reliable source of income, I decided to seek casual employment of herding cattles. Getting this job was very easy but the challenge is the lack payment. Since I do not pay a rent for the house I occupied, my employer has taken advantage of my vulnerability and it can goes for 3 months without giving my $50 monthly payment. This has affected the family especially my children's education because in most cases they are sent home due to lack of fees. Currently, my 2 boys who are still in pre-primary grades are at home since last term. I am even worried when they will resume classes because I do not have money to facilitate them. In addition, we usually forfeit meals at home, a situation that has affected our health status. Hence, I consider financial crisis as my biggest challenge."

Pendo
received a $25 tenth payment.
"I am a trained tailor, and my ambition has always been to open my own tailoring shop with enough textile materials to serve a large clientele. I am currently tailoring at home in the village, but I have few customers. Furthermore, I do not have enough textile materials to run my shop efficiently and profitably. I intend to relocate to the trading center, where I will be guaranteed more customers and thus more income. My husband is confident about getting a teaching job, which will benefit us by making it easier to meet our most basic needs, giving me a good opportunity to invest my transfers in the tailoring business."

Lilian
received a $144 initial payment.
"The day I received my transfer remains vivid in my memory. I was out in the field, diligently tending to my goats when my tranquility was interrupted by the resounding buzz of a message. Curiosity piqued, I reached for my phone and discovered a text from GiveDirectly, announcing the arrival of the funds. It was like a gust of fresh air on a hot, tiresome day. The news was so exhilarating that I momentarily forgot about the weariness brought upon me by the scorching sun. The excitement stemmed from the realization that I could now pursue the goals I had set for myself with renewed confidence. Upon returning home, I eagerly shared the news with my wife, who expressed her gratitude and shared my happiness."

Sheila
received a $144 initial payment.
"When we received the news about our transfer, one of our top priorities was ensuring that our home had an ample supply of food. This was the most immediate and pressing need we had to address. As a tailor, and with my husband relying on casual work for survival, financial constraints had always made it challenging for us. However, with the transfer, I immediately purchased a sack of maize for $60 and two cartons of milk for $12, providing us with essential sustenance. Additionally, I was able to finally pay off a debt of $80 that had accumulated due to our previous financial struggles. This debt had been incurred to cover our basic food needs during a difficult period when my husband worked in a school without receiving proper compensation. The relief and joy I feel now, reflecting on how far we have come, are immeasurable. I am deeply grateful for the positive changes we have experienced."
