What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Just before receiving the second transfer, all my five children had been sent home due to school fees arrears which had accumulated to huge amounts. Seeing them at home while their mates were at school was stressful to me as a parent. I had tried all means possible to get money to take them back to school, but it was all in vain. Immediately after I received the second transfer, I went to their respective schools and cleared the debts. I spent $400 for two who are in secondary school and $70 for three in primary school. With the remaining $80, I purchased foodstuff for the household since we had nothing left in the house to feed on.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly was welcomed into the village with great happiness and I can attest that our expectations of their delivery did not disappoint. I believe everyone concurs with a great job done in every household with no bias or discrimination. I have no complaints since the monetary support I received met most of the family needs I had planned.
How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
At the moment, I have a new goal to start a small hotel business that will help in supporting my family. This business will come in handy to cater to the daily basic needs.

What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a mother of five children, two being in high school. I currently ran a small business of selling charcoal within the neighborhood community while my husband works in Malindi as a mortuary attendant. What we earn is never enough to cater for the family financial demands especially education and food. I was overjoyed when I received my first transfer because I had several plans and goals that I wanted to achieve. For the longest time, I have been using traditional beddings such as old sacks clothes, something that has always left me with back-bone pain hence making it difficult for me to enjoy adequate sleep, this is due to the uncomfortable beddings . As a result, bought a bed worth KES 8,000 hence I have been enjoying my sleep. Furthermore, I bought a door using KES 12,000 and a tailoring machine worth KES 15,000 to help me complete my project that I have started of building a room to do tailoring business. In addition, I paid my two sons school fees using KES 16,000 and from then, they have never been sent back home. Last but not least, I bought food for the family worth KES 4,000, hence we have been enjoying decent and well-balanced diet meals which improved our health greatly. I am planning to spend my subsequent transfer in completing the room construction so that I can proceed with my tailoring business.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Previously, I was sleeping in old beddings which was quite uncomfortable and I hardly enjoy my sleep during the night. I would always wake up feeling weak and tired due to continuous backbone pain, resulting into low productivity at work. I am grateful for the support provided by GiveDirectly as I bought a modern bed worth KES 8,000. This brought a great difference in my life in that I can now enjoy my sleep without fear of having backbone pain, so do my three little children. Furthermore, the fact that I bought a door worth KES 12,000 and tailoring machine worth KES 15,000 to help me complete my goal of constructing a business room is a great achievement. I have always desired to have a business of my own and I believe this is going to be a dream come true when I will receive my last transfer to aid complete the process. I would buy more materials for the business being that I am a tailor. Furthermore, it was also a great achievement in my life when I paid my two sons' fees in time of KES 16,000. They no longer attend their class in fear of being sent back home.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7pm in the evening as I was preparing supper for the family, when I heard a message alert from my phone. I informed my younger son currently in form three to help with the message since I am not that illiterate and some poor eye-sight. I was overjoyed when he broke the good news that it was a confirmation message of KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. Then I knew my problems were over, I knew I would be able to pay my children school fees in time before they could be sent back home . I am a mother of five children, two being in high school. I am a small business woman selling charcoal to support my family basic needs back at home as my husband works in Malindi as a mortuary attendant. At first, I was perplexed and I did not know how to break the news to my husband due to extreme joy. I remember calling my husband three days after I received the transfer. He came back home immediately and we were able to sat down as a family and began planning how we would spend the transfer.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Getting an income that can sustain all my needs is my current challenge. I am a charcoal vendor and the business earns very little whereas it is tasking. Paying school fees for my children is currently my biggest burden. My daughter was supposed to join secondary school this week but I do not have enough money yet.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My children are my pride. They are doing well in school and healthwise too. The last few months have been good. My daughter has been offered admission to a secondary boarding school. She performed fairly well.
What does receiving this money mean to you?
When I receive this money, I plan to do some house repairs; priority being replacing the door to my house. It is in a bad condition that I have to tie it with a rope. I will buy a steel door at a cost of 5,000 KES. I will then buy a bed at 5,000 KES too. I have been sleeping on the floor for such a long time. I have a big school fees burden. I have a child in Secondary school and my second born should have joined last week but lack of money has delayed her. I will therefore set aside 30,000 KES for school fees.
