Mariamu
received a $403 initial payment.
"I am grateful to GiveDirectly because I am now building a spacious house in order to accommodate my children. They were seeking shelter from neighbors at night, which even affected their studies. I managed to buy enough building materials to build the new, spacious house. Once I move to my new house, I will give the old house to my children, and save them the trouble of seeking shelter elsewhere. Also, to curb food shortages in my household, I invested the transfer in ploughing my four-acre farm and hired labourers for timely planting. I am assured of getting a good harvest which will ensure food security in my household since my farm is fully utilised."

Alice
received a $403 initial payment.
"Building a spacious house was the only thing that I had hoped to accomplish even before the program. This is because the house where I have been staying is not spacious and the walls are weak. Also, I can not accommodate my children in the same house, so they had to seek shelter elsewhere. After receiving the transfer, I managed to gather enough building materials, such as iron sheets, nails, and building poles and began building a new, spacious house. I will be at peace to see my children have a good place to stay and relieve them of the stress of looking for shelter elsewhere. I also own goats that I acquired through the transfer. These are a security for the future of my children's education since I can readily sell the offspring as they reproduce to raise fees for my children."

Dzendere
received a $403 initial payment.
"Being in a polygamous family and depending on my husband, who sells charcoal as the only source of income, has made it challenging to even afford a decent house to live in. Living in a simple grass-thatched hut with my co-wife and the children was really distressing. Additionally, the hut itself is small and leaks when it rains. I am happy that when I received my first transfer, I was able to purchase iron sheets and timber in order to complete building the new house. I will no longer have to worry about my items being rained on, it's secure and spacious enough for us all."

Sidi
received a $403 initial payment.
"Before I got enrolled into the program, I was staying in a small grass thatched hut, had no plan of upgrading to a better house. It was also leaking when it rains and at times I was forced to look for shelter elsewhere and my belongings would be soaked by the rains. When I received the transfer, I managed to buy iron sheets and building poles and built a new decent iron roofed house. This has been my dream which I couldn't fulfill at my own cost. I couldn't afford to buy even a single set of the building materials. I am no longer worried of rains now since I am staying in an iron roofed house like my fellow villagers."

Naomi
received a $147 initial payment.
"When I received the first transfer from GiveDirectly, I felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Without hesitation, I used the funds to purchase a sack of dry maize grains for my family of seven for $63. It had been a difficult time for us as we were solely reliant on small-scale farming, which was severely affected by the ongoing drought. We had been buying food at a very high cost, and it had been straining our finances. I also headed to the nearby shop and cleared a $50 debt that had been accumulating from our previous purchases. It was a relief to have it off our backs. Additionally, I put $40 towards my son's secondary school tuition fees, and I also sent him $7 for his upkeep. I spent the remaining amount on other household goods. As a full-time pastor at two nearby churches, I am grateful for the monthly service pay as an expression of appreciation by the church leadership, which has been a great help in providing for my family."

Jumwa
received a $25 fourteenth payment.
"There are so many things that I wish to have accomplished in the coming years a beyond. However, my most pressing concerns right now include securing a bed and mattress, buying goats, and expanding my house with one more room. I feel like after many years of sleeping on a sisal-twined bed, it’s high time that I upgraded it to a wooden one plus a mattress. After that is accomplished, I plan to extend a room to my house to accommodate my three grandchildren. We currently share a space and it does not feel right given the age difference. Also, I wish to own more goats than the three that I acquired using previous transfers. After the transfer ceases, I believe that I will have grown substantial wealth through livestock keeping that will help support the needs of my family."
