"I live in a semi-arid area and due to the inconsistent rainfall, food insecurity is a challenge. I planted maize with the onset of the rainy season in April, unfortunately, it all dried up for lack of rain. I currently rely on casual jobs to put food on the table for my family of ten. Sometimes it is difficult to buy maize flour consistently and we are forced to eat a single meal each day."

"The house where I sleep currenting is not in a good condition, it's too small for me and my son.
Due to lack of finances I am unable to fix my house door.
And I have a small piece of land yet I so much would love to have a big piece of land to farm maize, beans and cassava for both home consumption and commerce purposes."

Isaac

"In a remarkably short period of time, my daily life has experienced a profound change as I successfully cleared the outstanding school fees. Thanks to the transfer I received, I was able to effortlessly settle the fees that once appeared insurmountable given my financial constraints. The knowledge that my children can now study in school without any worries fills me with immense joy and satisfaction. I cannot express enough gratitude for the support that has elevated our quality of life."

Pauline
received a $321 third payment.
"Upon receiving my most recent transfers, I made several choices to improve our living conditions and plan for the future. With $60, I decided to stock up on food for our family of four, as it can be overwhelming to provide daily meals. Additionally, I allocated $10 to purchase new clothes for myself, as my current wardrobe consists of worn-out and outdated items. Refreshing my attire would help boost my confidence.
Realizing that these transfers would be the last from Give Directly, I carefully considered long-term investments. I decided to invest approximately $100 in acquiring goats, as they would serve as a family investment to meet our future needs during challenging times.
Given my familiarity with raising chickens and their low maintenance requirements, I was thrilled to purchase a number of them for $150. This allowed us to establish a small-scale egg business, tapping into the market demand."

Brandy
received a $143 initial payment.
"When I received the transfers, I went with my spouse to withdraw them and then divide them in the order that we had agreed upon earlier. I took $40 and went to the food store, where I spent it on food. I went for food first because I am a housewife and spend most of my time at home with our child, and occasionally we are left without food to eat during the day, only to wait until evening when he returns home with it, which was uncomfortable for me. We had discussed purchasing two goats that we had already identified, and we only paid $100 for both. This is to protect our future obligations, especially when we do not have money, and we will sell them and use the money. We have plans to extend our home, and we purchased materials for $60 just to assemble them, so that when we begin construction, we will just be looking for the amount to pay for the labor, and we are very delighted to have done these things. We're getting better slowly, and by the third transfer, we'll be enjoying a fresh beginning in life."

"At the present, I am able to acquire whatever I require in order to make this area a better place. Having a place for the goats is something I didn't have before, and the fact that I have to eat every day and do my hard duties as normal makes a big difference."

Rael
received a $321 second payment.
"I have been selling honey to support my parental responsibilities, but recently things have become difficult for me. I have a candidate in Form 4, and having school fees arrears was not something pleasant. As soon as I received the GiveDirectly transfers, I cleared the $15 school fee arrears to ensure that he was not sent back home, which would have caused a lot of inconvenience for him because other children were busy studying. I also paid $100 for the water pipes I was purchasing for the purpose of doing irrigation on my farm without having to borrow from my neighbors, as I had always done whenever I wanted to water my agricultural items. This was quite exciting for me since I will be able to take care of my own farming and watering of the products without being scheduled. I've started tomato growing, which cost me $200 to set up everything on the farm, and I'm excited to see how much I can produce. I picked tomato farming in particular because of the large revenue it generates compared to all other crops, as many individuals in this area have proven."

Salina
received a $128 initial payment.
"The most noticeable difference in our home is that there is food in the house; previously, my children would walk inside the house and search everywhere, hoping to find even a small bit of ugali somewhere, but they couldn't find any. We've been working hard to keep this family going. We're a family of six, which may appear small in the eyes of our neighbors, but it's a huge family to us. We are deeply grateful to the GiveDirectly office for remembering people like us and coming through in an enormous way."

"I was in the middle of the women's merry-go-round when I got the transfers. With my joy, everything came to a halt as I ran towards home, where my husband was, so I could tell him the wonderful news. We both got excited about it because we knew how difficult it had been for us to pay school fees for three children, one in secondary school and two in university, and the one thing that we all wanted to see done was to clear the debt we had in the schools where our children were enrolled in order to be debt-free."
