"I recently ventured into turkey rearing as an extra source of income because they are less prone to diseases and sell at a better price compared to chickens despite the little difference in the time they take to mature. A 6-month old turkey can sell for approximately $30 while chicken of the same age would sell at $10. Chickens are also prone to diseases which quickly spreads whenever there is an outbreak in the village as many households rear chickens. After almost experiencing a loss from my chicken rearing business due to diseases, I decided to venture into turkey rearing which is less common within the village. I have only 4 turkeys at the moment but aims at increasing the number by using my transfers to purchase more of them at a young age then selling them when they mature. There is no ready market for turkeys within the village but I have identified a market where I will be selling them in town once they are ready. Once this turkey project is self sustainable, I will think of a new project that the transfers can help me to accomplish."

"My long-term goal is to have more goats that we can sell later on to raise school fees for our children when they join highschool. Goats reproduce very fast and require very minimal care hence are the best investment. My husband and I do not have stable income and failure to plan ahead may result in our children not proceeding to highschool due to lack of money to pay their fees. This is why I have decided to invest in goats that are affordable and can be purchased with a month's transfer. With the next few transfers however, I intend to clear my children's school fees so that they can finish the year without any balances to make next year easier and manageable. The intention is to keep them in school fully so that their learning is not affected or derailed. I also intend to purchase better clothing for the children and improve their sleeping conditions by purchasing a new mattress for them."

"The first thing I did when I received the second transfer was invest in ten goats. It cost me $200, but I knew it was a smart move. These goats would provide us with milk and, eventually, more goats to sell. I used $130 to pay the school fees for my three children. They had been out of school for a while because I couldn't afford their education. Seeing them back in school with smiles on their faces was the best feeling in my heart. Thereafter, I spent $100 on a new bed and mattress. Finally, we could sleep peacefully, and that made a huge difference in our daily lives. With the remaining amount, I made sure my family had enough food on the table and bought some good clothing for everyone. We might not have spent it on extravagant things, but those choices transformed our lives. Thanks to GiveDirectly, we now have hope, and security, for the future."

"Food insecurity has been the biggest challenge in this area. For the past five years, I have not harvested anything from the farm despite several attempts at planting. With my age, I now rely on casual employment at a nearby school which earns me $50 a month. This amount is very little to be able to pay school fees for my two grandchildren under my care at the same time food."

"I must say, GD has made a significant impact by providing us with unconditional transfers tailored to our specific needs. Among the many things I have accomplished with these transfers, there's one achievement I am particularly proud of – building a house for my son. Previously, he was living with his uncle, which was far from an ideal situation as I always worried about how the uncle might feel about it. Now, with the new house in place, my son has not only found a comfortable and secure shelter but also a peaceful environment to focus on his studies."

"I noticed that my child was facing challenges in the public school he used to attend, primarily because it was underperforming. The main reason he was enrolled there was due to the free education it offered, as I lacked the financial means to send him to a better school. However, upon receiving the transfers, I made a deliberate decision to invest in his education. I designated $100 to cover his school fees and allocated an additional $50 to purchase a new uniform. This ensured a fresh start in a more reputable school. Since this transition, I have witnessed a remarkable improvement in my child's academic performance, and I'm genuinely thankful to GD for providing me with this opportunity. Additionally, I initially kick-started a tailoring business in our community with the first transfer. With the second transfer of funds, I wisely invested $150 in materials, expanding my sales and customer orders. This strategic move significantly boosted my income, with earnings ranging from $10 to $40, marking a substantial improvement from the initial $5 weekly. To further secure my family's well-being, I utilized the remaining funds to purchase food, ensuring my son and I have a sufficient supply to tide us over while waiting for the harvest from my half-acre maize farm."

"My main objective is to acquire additional livestock, which will prove invaluable for supporting my family's education in the future. At present, I have six children who are attending primary school. By investing in livestock at this stage, I can allow them ample time to multiply, ensuring a sustainable source of income down the line. The proceeds from selling some of these animals can then be utilized to cover my children's school fees. I am pleased to note that there have been noticeable improvements in my children's education, as they are no longer faced with the frequent disruptions that previously resulted in them being sent home. This positive development brings me a great deal of happiness and reinforces my determination to continue working towards securing a brighter future for my family through educational opportunities."

"Ensuring my son's uninterrupted education is my utmost priority and a significant goal. I deeply felt a sense of sadness when he returned home one month, visibly upset and shedding tears as he witnessed his peers attending school while he remained absent. It was a poignant moment that motivated me to take firm action. Consequently, my plan is to diligently address the substantial debt accumulated from my son's schooling expenses. By paying off this debt, I am determined to ensure that he never experiences the disappointment of being sent home again and can continue his education without any interruptions. This commitment reflects my unwavering dedication to providing my son with the educational opportunities he deserves."
