"I am suffering from curvature of the spine that began 10 years ago and this has affected my walking posture. Because of this, I cannot engage in any activity to generate income making me dependent on other people to run even small errands. I have not sought medication due to lack of money. I went to the hospital last year in December but I came back unattended because I could not raise $100 that was required for an X-ray"

"I am a single mother of two children. Being born and raised by a single mother is a struggle. I have watched my mother struggle to raise the six of us until we completed high school and moved from home. My mother is a casual laborer who works as a charcoal burner, digging access holes to earn a living and most of the time it is a struggle to pay for my sibling’s school fees who are all in high school. When I received my first transfer, I used to open a charcoal business. Charcoal was in high demand, and I spent the rest of the money on buying livestock and buying some clothes for my family. The second transfer came, and I invested $170 in the business of selling sandals, as the charcoal business was on the low. My daughter was unwell, and I used $50 on her medication. My younger sister was sent home, and I took her back to school and paid for her school fees of $100, including her transport back to the school of $20. I also spent another $110 on food that would last my family for the next two months and saved the rest of the amount in case of unexpected costs, now that I am running two businesses concurrently."

"Food insecurity is a major challenge that we are currently faced with. We are a household of 9 and we have a small piece of land measuring 0.5 acres. This is hardly enough to till and do dairy farming at the same time. As such, we are forced to use the land for keeping our dairy cow as it is not enough to carry out maize farming, we are forced to buy the commodity at the nearby Kapkwen market which is expensive and sometimes unaffordable. It worries us a lot since we are people of little means who live from hand to mouth. Sometimes we do not get the money to buy it and we go to bed hungry. Such a life of destitution!"

"Give Directly was a miracle in my life. The funds came at the time I needed them. They enrolled me when I was still pregnant and used to work as a charcoal burner, which was not ideal for my condition. At the time of delivery, my husband had nothing, and we even planned to deliver my child at home, which is risky. I will forever be grateful for the support program. I see nothing that the organization is not doing well."

"I would like to expand my current business. Initially, I wanted to open a grocery which would cost me a lot more than what I used with my current business. The combination of a vegetable stall and a grocery would increase my income, which would allow me to accomplish my long-term goals like buying a plot and building my house."

"I have shop businesses selling variety of shop items. I started with a capital of $5 on January 2022. It has grown well such that I am now having a capital of $200. The business has had a challenge of debt defaulters in the past one month. I have customers who have been taking items on credit and currently, I have around $100 that I will never recover from the defaulter. That is the challenge I am currently facing."

"I am a father of eight and I got an accident five years ago when I was working with Petro city petrol station in Mombasa. On January 2017 a container slides from one of the lorries and fell on my left leg. I lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital. My leg was amputated and my lifestyle changed forever. Later on 2020, I suffered a stroke that made me unable to walk completely. I am always indoors. The accident and stroke affected my work. I only depend on my son who works as a teacher. My wife Zawadi is mentally challenged and she cannot even take care of me. I get assistance from the neighbours in terms of dressing and washing my body. Being an ability to stand on my own and walk is the challenge I am currently facing."
