Cosmas
received a $346 second payment.
"My wife and I are subsistence farmers, and together we are blessed with a child. Since agriculture is the foundation of our finances, we had to think about investing more in it as soon as we were assured that we would receive funding from GiveDirectly. As a result, I set aside $350 of the money I was given so that I could start a goat breeding project after the rains came back. Second, I used the remaining money to buy food. Because goats can withstand droughts and grow quickly in comparison to other animals, I considered raising them so we could provide milk for our children. I am so happy and content that finally, my dream of developing my finances will be realized sooner than I had expected."

"Upon receipt of receiving my transfer, I knew that it was the ideal time for me to purchase a motorcycle. This is because I use to ride a rental motorcycle that was unreliable. This is because the owner would demand payment even in challenging circumstances. As I ride boda boda for a living, my wife studies a secretarial course. We are blessed with one child. I already have $250 placed as a downpayment for the motorcycle, $100 to upgrade my ant-infested home, and $100 to purchase a smartphone to understand the digital age. I am happy my dream to own a motorcycle has been achieved."

David
received a $139 initial payment.
"The transfer has significantly changed my life, for the better. It's made me incredibly happy. This is because I recently purchased a mattress that allows us to sleep comfortably instead of on the floor as we did in the past. I have hopes for the future as I have to broaden my future. I was also able to stock enough food to meet our needs. The fact is neither I nor my family will go hungry makes me happy and I'm thankful."

"When we got promised we would receive money from GiveDirectly, we thought it would be the best investment we could make. My husband and I prioritized fencing our land. This would enable me to plant pawpaw and mangoes. We were confident in this venture of earning a living since we had that concept before but got restrained by finances. I'm a farmer whereas my husband works as a butcher. Despite our meager earnings, I also suffered a leg injury recently and was now reliant on my husband. We have eight children with four of them still schooling. As a result, we spent $70 on school and another $100 on fencing our property. The remainder of the cash went towards food. My husband and I are forever grateful for the kind gesture we received."

"Living with many uncertainties on a well-wisher's piece of land has been difficult and has never given me peace of mind with my two grown sons. Meeting all of the household's obligations has been difficult for me as a single mother who has been internally displaced from our original home by the neighboring community. I am grateful that GiveDirectly enabled me to build a new house and move out of the old, dilapidated hut I was living in. When I received the second transfer, I was relieved to resume the land ownership process because the owner of the parcel in which I was living was willing to give me a portion of it. I paid $100 as the first installment and intend to pay the remainder when I am able. I have two sons, one of whom is in school, and I had to pay $5 in arrears to allow him to continue his education without interruption. In addition, I spent $165 on food, which included dry maize grains, beans, rice, and sugar, all of which I still use today. I gave $10 to each of my three daughters, who live with their families in nearby villages, purchased an additional goat to add to the existing five, and decided to save the remaining portion for any upcoming emergencies before receiving the final transfer. I am grateful for the overwhelming support and hopeful that the final transfer will complete the payment for the land."

Naomi
received a $154 initial payment.
"I received my first transfer around 4:00 p.m., which I confirmed via a notification message from the mobile money service. I was intrigued and quickly checked my account balance, where I discovered that the amount received matched the promise I was expecting from GiveDirectly. I was with my mother, who had also received similar information, and after my brother confirmed the available balance in my mother's, we all burst out cheerfully and thanked God for the provision. I was unable to collect it on the same day, but I transferred $60 to my mother's account, which she used to purchase retail goods for a joint business venture."

Kimoi
received a $346 second payment.
"My lastborn son died a year after we buried his wife, leaving me with six orphans for whom I have struggled to provide. At 77, I am unable to do anything on the farm or in business other than the small-scale livestock farming that I am currently engaged in. We used to have over 200 animals, but my husband, son, and wife's frequent hospital visits depleted the herd, leaving me with only three cows. It was unfortunate that none of them managed to come out of the hospital alive. One of the six orphaned children is mentally unstable and has hand paralysis; the elder completed his secondary studies and moved to his uncle's home; and the other four are completely reliant on me for their school fees and upkeep when they return home. It is unfortunate that I was unable to provide the mentally unstable child with special education, which is more expensive than the others. When I received the second transfer, I spent $370 on clearing their school fee arrears, leaving me with only $70 to spend on other household goods, of which I spent $40 on foodstuff and household consumables, including toiletries, and saved the remaining $30 for transportation costs when my grandchildren returned from school. Gladys, my daughter and helper, has been an incredible source of support for me. She always contributes to the purchase of food, as well as other household expenses."

"Scarcity of money that has made living conditions so hard that in my family we can hardly have 1 meal, and also as a family. We have so much desired to move to a safe place free from Landslides but we don't have means to do so."
