"What has been challenging for us is lack of food. The last rains we experienced was three years ago. Since we depend on livestock it's difficult hearding them during the drought season. Their numbers have reduced, this stresses me.
I am always worried about my next meal. If the rains don't come back it could get very difficult for us. We Buying food expensive unlike in the past when we could plant our own farms."

"I spent part of my second transfer on purchasing a piece of land that was about an acre and cost around $500. The recent one was for the whole extended family, and it was very small. In every planting season, I had to lease from neighbours so that I could get meaningful farm products. Sometimes I could afford it, which facilitated the prolonged poverty and unavailability of food on my homestead. I now feel relieved because this has finally come to an end. Furthermore, I am planning to build a new house on this piece of land. To add to that, I paid fees for my daughter, who is in primary school. She has been on and off from school due to the arrears, which used to frustrate me and always make me worry as a mother. This is because this situation has been affecting her performance at large. Currently, I do not have a reliable source of income, so supporting her education has been a challenge."

"I would say my family and I are now happier and are living better. We used to cultivate in the lands that we rented because our own land has not been fertile lately but we are now able to buy food for our household and concentrate on working in our very own field without seeking help."

"In my opinion, GiveDirectly did a great job by first being transparent and honest with me. The most outstanding part was that they kept their promise to send the cash transfer. I had the privilege to choose what works best for me and my household as a whole. I, therefore, do not see anything that needs to be reviewed as they move to the next village. "

"By the end of this year, I want to have purchased all the building supplies, such as iron sheets, building poles, cement, and stones, by consolidating all the money from my monthly transfers. I'll be able to start construction on a bigger, more durable house before the rainy season starts. Knowing that I will have a better place to sleep and that my belongings are safe in the house will make me feel much more at ease."

"I have always loved farming and it has been the main source of livelihood for my family. However, my family farm has been facing some serious financial constraints in recent years, and it all started with a landslide that occurred in 1997.
The landslide carried away all the good loam soil and left behind rocky soils. Since then, whenever I plant crops, I don't get the expected yields, and this has affected my income. As a result, I struggle to pay for my children's school fees, and they are often chased away from school during examination periods.
This situation is heartbreaking for me as a parent because education is the only way out of poverty for my children. I have tried to supplement my income by taking on odd jobs like constructing houses, but it's not enough. I am determined to find a solution to our financial constraints, and I will do whatever it takes to provide a better future for my children"
